Chest Supported Lever Row

Strict, heavy rowing with zero lower back load. The chest pad takes the strain, your upper back does the work. Bent over rows build backs and break lower backs. The Chest Supported Lever Row locks your torso against the pad so every kilo goes through the lats, rhomboids and traps, not the spine. Strict reps, heavy loads, no cheating.

Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row plate loaded machine

What is a chest supported row machine?

A chest supported row is a plate loaded back machine where you lie face down on an angled chest pad with your feet on a foot plate and pull two lever arms towards you. The pad holds your torso still. That is the whole idea. A bent over row makes the lower back hold the position while the upper back does the pulling, and the lower back always gives out first. On a chest supported row the pad does the holding, so the only thing that can fail is the muscle you are actually training.

The Phoenix version is lever driven, not cable driven. Olympic plates load straight onto the arms, the arms pivot on a fixed path, and the resistance you feel is the plates you put on. No stack, no cable, no pulley.

Why gyms buy a chest supported row

Because it is the one row every member can do heavy and safely without a coach standing over them. On a commercial floor that matters more than anything. A rowing station that only strong, well coached lifters can use properly is a station half your members avoid. A chest supported row is a station everyone uses, from the first week beginner to the bodybuilder running twenty sets of back a week.

It also solves a liability problem. Heavy bent over rows and heavy barbell rows are where lower backs get hurt on a gym floor. Put the torso on a pad and that risk disappears. For facilities training athletes around existing lower back issues, it is often the only heavy row they are allowed to do.

And it builds backs. The converging arc on the lever arms pulls your hands in towards your torso at the top of the rep, which puts the lats and rhomboids into a full contracted position that a straight bar never reaches.

Chest supported row vs T bar row vs barbell row

Three heavy rows. Pick for the floor you run, not for the lifter you used to be.

Chest supported row T bar row Barbell row
Torso Braced face down on an angled chest pad Hip hinge, braced by the lifter Hip hinge, fully unsupported
Lower back Out of the lift Loaded, balance handled by the pivot Fully loaded, technique dependent
Load path Fixed lever arc, converging at the top Fixed arc on a landmine pivot Free, the lifter controls it
Arms Independent, unilateral or bilateral Both hands on one bar Both hands on one bar
Handles 360 degree rotating Adjustable fixed handles Bar only
Best for Strict volume, members with back issues, training to failure Heavy back thickness with the hinge kept in Coached lifters with strong technique

If you only have room for one row and you run a commercial floor, buy the chest supported row. It is the one every member can use. If you have room for two, pair it with the T Bar Row and you cover strict volume and heavy hinge work on two stations.

Independent arms and why they matter

The two lever arms move independently. That gives you three exercises on one machine. Pull both arms together for a standard heavy row. Pull one arm at a time for unilateral work. Or alternate arms rep by rep. Independent arms also stop the strong side taking over. On a single bar the dominant side quietly does more of the work for years. On independent arms each side moves its own plates and the weak side has nowhere to hide.

On the 360 degree handles

Fixed handles force your wrist and elbow into one path whether it suits your shoulder or not. The rotating handles on the Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row let the joint settle where it wants to, which means members can load heavier without the elbow and shoulder pain that eventually makes them stop using a machine altogether. Neutral, pronated, supinated or anywhere in between, the handle follows the hand.

How to use it

Set the chest pad for your torso length so the handles sit level with your lower chest at the start. Stand on the foot plate, lie into the pad, take the handles and let your arms hang straight. Drive your elbows back and in until the arms converge at the top, squeeze the upper back, then lower under control. Keep your chest glued to the pad for the whole set. If the chest comes off the pad, the weight is too heavy.

Because the lower back is out of the lift, you can take every set to genuine failure. That is the point of the machine. Use it.

Why gyms buy it

Built for the floor

01

Strict reps, zero cheat

The angled chest pad braces your torso through the whole set. No momentum, no lower back fatigue deciding when the set ends. Just upper back working to failure, safely.

02

A real load path

Olympic plate loaded lever arms with a smooth converging arc. Direct load feel, small increment loading with fractional plates, and commercial build quality that cops set after set.

03

Independent arms

Each arm moves its own plates. Row both together, one at a time or alternating. The strong side cannot take over and the weak side has nowhere to hide.

04

Handles that follow the hand

360 degree rotating handles let the wrist and elbow settle where the shoulder wants them. Members load heavier for longer without the joint pain that drives people off fixed handle machines.

FAQ

Chest Supported Lever Row questions

What is a chest supported row machine?

A plate loaded back machine where you lie face down on an angled chest pad, brace your feet on a foot plate and pull two lever arms towards you. The pad holds your torso still, so the lower back is out of the lift and the lats, rhomboids and traps do all the work. The Phoenix version is lever driven and loads with Olympic plates.

What muscles does the chest supported row work?

The upper back: lats, rhomboids and traps, with the rear delts and biceps assisting. The converging arc on the lever arms pulls the hands in towards the torso at the top, which puts the lats and rhomboids into a fully contracted position a straight bar never reaches.

Is a chest supported row better than a bent over row?

For almost everyone on a commercial floor, yes. A bent over row makes the lower back hold the position while the upper back pulls, and the lower back gives out first. A chest supported row puts the torso on a pad so the only thing that can fail is the muscle you are training. You can row heavier, stricter and to genuine failure with no spotter and no back risk.

T bar row vs chest supported row, which should I buy?

If you only have room for one row on a commercial floor, buy the chest supported row, because every member can use it heavy and safely. The T bar row keeps the hip hinge, so it feels heavier and builds the whole posterior chain, but it still loads the lower back. Most serious gyms run both, the Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row for strict volume and the T Bar Row for heavy hinge work.

Does the Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row have independent arms?

Yes. The two lever arms move independently. Row both together for a standard heavy set, one arm at a time for unilateral work, or alternate rep by rep. Independent arms stop the dominant side quietly doing more of the work.

What are 360 degree rotating handles and why do they matter?

The handles rotate freely so the wrist and elbow can settle on whatever path suits the shoulder. Fixed handles force one path on everyone. Rotating handles let members load heavier for longer without the elbow and shoulder pain that makes people stop using a machine.

Does the chest pad adjust?

Yes. The angled chest pad adjusts for different torso lengths, so a short member and a tall member both start with the handles in the right place. Set it so the handles sit level with your lower chest at the start of the rep.

What plates does it take?

Standard Olympic plates on the lever arms. Bumper plates, calibrated steel plates and rubber coated plates all work. It is plate loaded, so there is no stack to service and loading is as fine as the smallest plate you own.

How much floor space does it need?

The footprint is 1210mm wide by 2020mm long. Allow clearance on both sides for loading plates onto the arms and a clear approach at the rear for stepping onto the foot plate.

Is the Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row made in Vietnam?

Yes. The Phoenix Chest Supported Lever Row is designed and built in Vietnam by Phoenix Strength Co, the original Vietnamese strength equipment supplier, in production since 2016. Vietnam origin documents are supplied with every shipment, so it is not caught in the China specific tariffs applied by the United States and some other markets.
