What is a linear leg press?

A linear leg press is a plate loaded leg machine where the sled travels on a straight track. You lie back on the pad, put your feet on the foot plate, unlock the sled and press it away from you along that line. The plates sit on horns either side of the sled, so the resistance you feel is the plates you load, nothing else. No weight stack, no cable, no pulley.

The word linear is the point of difference. A 45 degree press runs a sled up a pair of angled rails. A lever leg press swings a loaded arm on an arc. A linear press moves the load in a straight line, which gives a consistent feel from the first centimetre of the rep to the last and lets you push very heavy loads through a smooth, controlled path.

Why gyms buy a leg press

Because it is the one leg machine every member can use heavy. Squats need technique and a spotter. A leg press needs neither. A beginner can learn it in one set, a bodybuilder can take it to failure without anyone standing over them, and an athlete coming back from a knee or back issue can load the legs without loading the spine.

For an owner, a plate loaded leg press has no stack to service and no cable to fray. It takes the Olympic plates you already have, and it survives. The Phoenix Linear Leg Press is built in commercial steel for heavy daily use, which is the only way a leg press on a busy floor stays in service.

The oversized foot plate is the other reason. Foot placement decides what a leg press trains. High and wide hits the glutes and hamstrings. Low and narrow hits the quads. A small foot plate limits what members can do. A large one gives every member every option.

Linear leg press vs 45 degree leg press vs lever leg press

Three ways to press. Pick the one that suits the floor and the members.

Linear leg press 45 degree leg press Lever leg press
Load path Straight line on a linear track Straight sled on 45 degree rails Arc on a pivoting lever arm
Body position Lying back, low to the floor Seated at the base of the rails, reclined Seated upright or reclined against a back pad
Feel through the rep Consistent from start to finish Heavy at the bottom, eases towards lockout Changes through the arc, often easier at the top
Loading Olympic plates on horns either side of the sled Olympic plates on sled horns Olympic plates on the lever arm
Getting on and off Step in at floor level Climb into the seat under the sled Sit down as you would on any seated machine
Best for Heavy, controlled pressing with a consistent feel Maximum absolute load, the classic bodybuilding press Compact footprint, easy access, general leg volume

Many commercial floors run two of the three. If you want the one that gives members the smoothest, most predictable press and the largest foot plate to work with, this is it. If you need a compact seated press for a tight floor, look at the Lever Leg Press. If you want the classic angled sled, the Bilateral Leg Press and Hack Squat 45 cover it.

Why the foot plate matters

On a leg press the foot plate is the exercise. Feet high and wide, the hips do more and the glutes and hamstrings take over. Feet low and close, the knees travel further and the quads do the work. Toes out hits the inner thigh. One foot at a time turns it into a single leg press. An oversized foot plate makes every one of those options available to a member who is 150cm tall and a member who is 200cm tall. A small plate makes most of them impossible for one or the other.

How to use it

Lie back on the pad with your head and hips supported. Put your feet on the foot plate about shoulder width apart, unlock the sled and press it away until your legs are straight but not locked. Lower under control until your knees are deep, stopping before your hips roll off the pad. Press back out through the whole foot. Keep the movement smooth. The sled runs on a straight track for a reason, so let it.

Load it with the plates you own, in the increments you want. Fractional plates give you progress in small steps for members who are not ready to jump a full plate a side.

Why gyms buy it

Built for the floor

01

Heavy legs, no spine

Lie back, load the horns and press. The legs do the work and the lower back never carries the weight. Members train legs to failure with no spotter and no technique risk.

02

Smooth from start to finish

The sled runs on a straight linear track, so the rep feels the same at the bottom as it does at the top. No arc, no sticking point the machine invented, just the plates you loaded.

03

One foot plate, every variation

The oversized foot plate takes high, low, wide, narrow and single leg positions. Quads, glutes or hamstrings, the member picks the target by where they put their feet.

04

Built for all day use

Commercial steel, plate loaded, nothing to service. It is specified for commercial and performance gyms where the leg press is the busiest machine on the floor.

FAQ

Linear Leg Press questions

What is a linear leg press?

A plate loaded leg machine where the sled travels on a straight track. You lie back on the pad, put your feet on the oversized foot plate, unlock the sled and press it away from you in a straight line. Olympic plates load onto horns either side of the sled, so the resistance you feel is the plates you load.

What is the difference between a linear leg press and a 45 degree leg press?

A 45 degree leg press runs a sled up angled rails while you sit reclined at the base. A linear leg press moves the sled on a straight track while you lie back low to the floor. The linear press gives a more consistent feel from the start of the rep to the finish, and you step in at floor level instead of climbing into a seat under the sled.

Linear leg press vs lever leg press, which should a gym buy?

A lever leg press is a seated machine where the load swings on a pivoting arm, so it is compact and easy to get on and off. A linear leg press moves the load in a straight line, which gives a smoother and more predictable press under heavy load and a bigger foot plate to work with. Many commercial floors run both. If you are buying one for heavy pressing, buy the linear press. If floor space is tight, look at the Phoenix Lever Leg Press.

What muscles does the leg press work?

Quads, glutes and hamstrings. Foot placement decides the emphasis. Feet high and wide on the plate load the glutes and hamstrings. Feet low and close load the quads. Single leg pressing is possible on the oversized foot plate.

Is a leg press better than squats?

Different tools. A barbell squat loads the spine to load the legs, which is fine for a strong lifter with good technique. A leg press loads the legs without the spine and needs no spotter, so every member can use it heavy. Most gyms want both: racks for the lifters who squat and a leg press for everyone who wants big legs without the back risk.

What plates does it take?

Standard Olympic plates on the horns either side of the sled. Bumper plates, calibrated steel plates and rubber coated plates all work. It is plate loaded, so there is no stack to service and loading is as fine as the smallest plate you own.

Is the Phoenix Linear Leg Press commercial grade?

Yes. It is built in commercial steel with a powder coat finish for heavy daily use in commercial and performance gyms. Plate loaded, so there is no stack, cable or pulley to wear out on a busy floor.

How much floor space does it need?

A linear leg press is a long, low machine. WhatsApp Andy on +61 422 046 895 for the exact footprint and the clearance you should allow for plate loading on both sides.

Can I choose the colour?

Yes. The standard finish is a satin black frame with black upholstery. The Build Your Finish picker on this page offers Any RAL frame colour and 6 upholstery colours with standard, contrast or diamond stitching. Every machine is made to order, so it leaves in the colour your floor needs.

Is the Phoenix Linear Leg Press made in Vietnam?

Yes. The Phoenix Linear Leg Press is designed and built in Vietnam by Phoenix Strength Co, the original Vietnamese strength equipment supplier, in production since 2016. Vietnam origin documents are supplied with every shipment, so it is not caught in the China specific tariffs applied by the United States and some other markets.

How do I buy the Linear Leg Press outside Australia?

Factory direct from Phoenix Strength Co in US dollars. Request the USD price list and catalog on this page, then WhatsApp Andy on +61 422 046 895 with your quantity and destination port. Single machines, packages and full container fit outs are all quoted, FOB Vietnam or delivered.
